It felt like New Years for me on Thursday night with, what's become, the annual festival of The NFL Kickoff! A pleasure to kick back and just let in unfold, when things finally DID unfold after a severe lightning warning delay of almost one hour! It had me thinking about the BOOM BOOM OUT GO THE LIGHTS moment from the Super Bowl.
Watching Peyton put up 7 TD's (yes that was Yale Abraham Title who was one of the greats to accomplish that feat back in the day!) made me think of Giants Defensive Coordinator Perry Fewell who had to be watching that performance and sweating bullets as Big Blue takes on The Broncos in their home opener at MetLife next weekend. Manning Manning Bowl if you like.............
Before that fun there's some OTHER fun to take care of and that would be a date with the anti Christ's Dallas Cowboys! Yes let the hatred go on forever for me. To be fair, the Cowboys came into MetLife Stadium a year ago and wrecked the Super Bowl Champion's party big time. I've had my share of horrible walks out of my stadium through the years and last year's walk to F5 was brutal. And the Cowboy fans jubilant and shouting on the way out is always gut wrenching.
Truth be told? Everything you needed to know about Big Blue's season was right there on display for you to ponder on opening night. Not a happy thought but reality. Don't believe me? Let's review!
RUNNING GAME: Big Blur runs for a meager 82 yards and Demarco Murray runs rampant for 131 yards! Those huge gashes in the Giants D line were no illusion. Go and count up the times we gave up 100 yards plus rushing and you'll start to feel sick all over again! That home game Vs. The Steelers was repugnant. The Steelers 3rd string back ran for almost 150 yards and the Steelers center Poucey was like a ginzu knife on our D Line and linebackers.
QB PLAY: Eli was mediocre at best and had an egregous pick on the Dallas 2 yard line after Micahel Boley had picked off Romo and returned it just short of a Pick 6 TD. Do NOT misinterpret this, there isn't any bigger fan of Eli than me but Eli himself would tell you at your own tailgate party that he had an off year.
D LINE: No pas rush and now we know that part of this was JPP and a balky back that required off season surgery. Things you can't know while the season is in progress. A lesson we as fans have to learn over and over again. You can't know if guys are playing hurt and doing the best they can until after the fact. Here again though, all th things you saw in the first game was there the rest of the season. Huge holes opened up for big chunks of rushing yardage and we were down 15 sacks from the previous Super Bowl season.
Yep, it was all on display so let's hope that things are better for the season opener tomorrow night! Not perfect but better because as you can see, sometimes what you see IS what you get, it was last year. Let's hope for better run D and for David Wilson to run amok, for Eli to throw the ball away instead of throwing a bad pick. Let's see JPP get a sack and Justin Tuck too! Let's see those big rear ends on the newly minted D Line keep Demarco Murray in check! Hey, how about an interception for Tyrell Thomas in his first readl deal action in years!!
One fianl word of caution for you fans of Big Blue who've been spouting off about how we own the Cowboys in the ANti Christ's playpen: RE_WATCH those games and remember how close they were! Fingernails decied the fate of two of them so be prepared to feel your stomach growl late in the 4th Q!
Let's hope that we can take a measure of revenge tomorrow night and have THEM take that long quiet walk back to their cars and let's get off to a good start!
