Brutal heat and thunderstorms in the Central and Eastern U.S. killed at least 16 people over the weekend and left millions without power.
The fatalities occurred from Friday through today Sunday. Thirteen died on Friday and Saturday with three more killed in thunderstorms in North Carolina today.
Temperatures today exceeded 100 degrees in many areas in the Southeast and Midwest, while the heat index is soaring. The National Weather Service issued a warning that the heat index could reach 120 degrees near the coast in North Carolina.
