Well week one of the new NFL season came and went. The Jets are 1-0 and the home opener looms on the horizon - 4:15 this Sunday against New England. So show of hands - how many people would have predicted the Jets would be a FAVORITE to beat the Pats a month ago, even with Brett Favre and his cannon arm? Is your arm up? LIAR!
[Put your hands down, NO ONE saw this coming]
Even with the injury to Tom Brady I'm absolutely shocked that the Jets are the betting favorite (opening at -3). A lot of gamblers are too since the line already moved down to -2 1/2. Even on the q1043.com gridiron challenge which has no spread the Jets are a 2-1 favorite! I should be happy right? I should be thrilled right? The Jets are getting the respect they deserve right? So how come I feel like I'm going to throw up when I think about this game?
[At least it's green....]
Look, the QB position is the most important on the field. No one doubts that. But football is the ultimate team sport. How else did the Baltimore Ravens win a superbowl with Trent friggin' Dilfer at Quarterback? Do we really think that a team that went 18-1 is all of a sudden complete crap because Brady went down? We still have to cover Randy Moss and Wes Welker. We still have to stop Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney. We still have to block their defensive front 7. A favorite? You've got to be kidding.
[An all too familiar view of Randy Moss for a Jets D-Back]
I liked the way the Jets looked last week, even with the last second push by Miami. But we proved a couple of things I already knew - With 7 new free agents added to the Jets and a couple of key rookies it will take some time for things to gel. Also, Miami isn't nearly as bad as people think and neither is Chad Pennington. They desperately needed a QB who had a clue and they got one. They aren't going to the playoffs any time soon but it scares me to death that we may need to beat them in the Meadowlands on December 28th to get a birth ourselves. Circle that one on your Calendar! By the way, don't discount Ricky Williams either if he can stay off the weed for a month or two. He's still a great runner.
[Ricky, Don't Bogart that....]
Tailgate tips on Friday and I'll see you in the parking lot at section 10c against the wall. I'll be there at 11:15 sharp - 5 hours exactly before game time...
