De Blasio Won’t Reimburse Taxpayers for Trips
Posted Tuesday, August 19th 2014 @ 5am

Mayor Bill de Blasio says he will not reimburse the city for his travel expenses.  He’s been criticized in recent days for allowing taxpayers to fund part of his personal trips out of state.

De Blasio said he’s abiding by a 2009 ruling by the Conflicts of Interest Board, which allows lawmakers with police protection to use city issued cars for personal use without reimbursing the city.

The ruling states that elected officials are allowed to reimburse the city if they choose, and many have done so in the past.

De Blasio argues he paid for his trip to Italy last month, including the airfare and the hotels.

But the Wall Street Journal reported that taxpayers picked up the bill for the Mercedes-Benz that chauffeured the mayor around Italy.

De Blasio says he’s simply following the Conflicts of Interest Board’s guidelines.
